Roy's Peak is one of the South Island’s busiest hikes, and yeah, it’s worth it. But don’t get comfy thinking it’s a walk in the park. It’s about 8 km each way with a hefty 1000 meters of climb. The trail’s a steady grind up a gravel path, taking around 3 hours to get to the lookout, then another half hour if you wanna push to the very top.

The views from up there of Lake Wānaka and the mountains everywhere are stunning. It is really popular as a sunrise hike and for good reason. The sunrise pics look perfect if you're willing to do the early start. Just make sure you’re ready for the climb and that the weather can flip fast, so pack layers.

Plus, there are heaps of sheep roaming around, which is adorable!
