Hell’s Gate Geothermal Reserve and Mud Spa is the perfect spot to dive into Rotorua’s geothermal wonders, where you’ll find hot springs and geysers everywhere. You can choose to wander the reserve, head straight to the mud spa, or go for a package deal (which, tbh, is the way to go). The full package is $115, with the spa alone at $90 and the walk at $45, so might as well treat yourself with the bundle.

If you can time your visit to join a guided tour, it’s totally worth it to learn about the history and significance of the land (check their website for tour times). But if you’re flying solo, no worries, you can still do a self-guided tour with a pamphlet packed with great info. The walk is 2 kilometers in total and takes about 1 hour to complete, and at the end, you can even try your hand at wood carving, which is super cool and gives you a new appreciation for all the Maori wood carvings around Aotearoa.

Once you’ve explored, head to the mud baths to immerse yourself in the healing properties of the geothermal mud and sulphur waters. It’s an 800-year-old tradition, so you’re really soaking in history. Just a heads-up: you’re only allowed in the mud for 20 minutes, and they do time you, longer than that can be too much for your body. Afterward, you can chill in the hot pools for as long as you like, which is perfect for unwinding.
