Hidden gem with clear waters

Beach

I was told about this beach by three different NZ locals on three different occasions, and I totally get why it’s a local favourite. Unfortunately, when I visited, the weather was cloudy and a bit too chilly for me to jump in for a swim. But even with the overcast sky, the beach was still an absolute stunner.

This little gem is tucked away off the Tutukaka Coast in Northland, and it’s surrounded by Pohutukawa trees, which give the beach this magical, enclosed feel, almost like you’ve found a secret spot all to yourself. On hot days, the trees provide perfect shade, making it the ultimate chill spot.

Getting to the beach involves a short walk, but it’s worth it! You can park at the Whale Bay carpark and do the easy 800-meter stroll to the water—great for families or anyone looking for a quick, easy walk. But if you're up for a bit more of an adventure, I’d suggest the Whale Bay Loop Walk. You can start it at the same car park or from Matapouri Beach carpark. It’s a 4-kilometre trail that takes you past both beaches, a lookout, and some seriously gorgeous coastline views. So, whether you’re up for a casual beach day or a more scenic hike, this spot has got you covered.
