This was my fave stop in the Catlins,  it’s got such dramatic coastal energy going on. Nugget Point is super easy to get to, with a short 20-minute return walk on a well-formed path that takes you out to a stunning lookout. You’ll pass heaps of wildlife on the way, I saw seals chilling on the rocks and heaps of seabirds doing their thing.

At the end, you get this unreal view of the lighthouse perched on the cliff, with all the jagged little rock islands (aka “The Nuggets”) scattered out in the ocean. It feels wild and raw and honestly looks like something out of a movie. There’s no entry fee or anything, just park up and wander out. Sunset here is magic if the weather plays nice, and it’s a pretty quick stop so it’s easy to squeeze in if you’re road-tripping through the Catlins.
