Penola is this delightful little town in South Australia, and honestly, I didn’t have it on my radar until my sister, who was clearly channeling her inner tour guide, suggested we check it out. We were on a road trip, and she wanted to pay homage to Mary MacKillop, Australia's first saint, given our shared Catholic school background. I’ll admit, I wasn’t the most enthusiastic student back then, but visiting Penola turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
This charming town, established in 1867, has deep historical ties to Mary MacKillop and is packed with heritage-listed sites. We wandered around St Andrew's Presbyterian Church and the Penola Public Library, soaking in the old-school vibe. The Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre was a highlight, offering a fascinating glimpse into her life and legacy. The town’s relaxed atmosphere, coupled with the friendly locals, made for a laid-back and enjoyable visit. It’s a sweet spot to immerse yourself in a bit of history while taking in some lovely South Australian scenery.
