If you're in Mount Gambier between May and June, make sure to check out Ghost Mushroom Lane for a glimpse of the famous bioluminescent fungi. These mushrooms light up the forest floor with an otherworldly green glow after dark, creating an enchanting atmosphere that's truly magical. The drive to Ghost Mushroom Lane takes about 20 minutes from Mount Gambier. While the road is generally okay, you'll hit a few rough patches as you get closer. It’s a dirt road, but easily navigable in a 2WD, just be cautious and keep an eye out for the car park as it is a one-way loop so you don’t miss it or you'll have to go around again.
Entry to the site is free, but don’t forget to bring a flashlight since it’s pitch black in the forest, and honestly, a bit spooky! I was glad to have my sister with me for moral support, going solo would have been a bit nerve-wracking, haha. From the carpark, you’ll find two separate areas to explore, each marked with signs. The glow of the mushrooms is quite subtle, so you'll need to turn off your lights and give your eyes a few moments to adjust to see them properly. It’s tricky to capture their glow on camera, my iPhone didn’t pick it up, but my sister’s professional camera with adjusted settings did the trick. Overall, it’s a unique and magical experience that’s well worth the visit.
