She’s an icon, she’s the moment…Huka Falls! This place is a total powerhouse of nature. No one visits Taupo without stopping into see these stunning falls that gush through the Waikato River at a mind-blowing rate of 220,000 liters per second. That’s a whole lot of water pouring over the 11-meter drop, creating an electric blue spray that’s impossible not to stop and admire.

The falls themselves are easily accessible, just a short walk from the carpark to the viewing platforms, so you don’t have to do any crazy hiking to get a good look. It’s a perfect spot for photos, and the turquoise color of the water looks almost unreal, thanks to the high mineral content in the river.

If you’re into the adrenaline rush, there’s also a jet boat ride that takes you up close to the falls, but be prepared to get wet.  Its an experience I of wish I did.
