I’m usually not much of a city person, and I only head into town for groceries and gear, but I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by The Strand in Townsville. This waterfront esplanade is a vibrant mix of sun, sea, and urban charm, and it makes for a fantastic stroll. Whether you're up for a leisurely walk along the 2.2-kilometer path, taking a refreshing dip in the iconic Strand Rock Pool, or just relaxing under a shady palm, The Strand truly has it all.
During my visit in late July, I got to experience the biennial Sculptural Festival, an incredible art exhibition that transforms The Strand into an open-air gallery. Art installations and information were spread along the esplanade, adding a unique touch to the already stunning views of Magnetic Island and the Coral Sea. If you're in Townsville, definitely check if there are any local events or festivals happening—you might get lucky and catch something special.
The Strand also boasts a great selection of cafes and eateries, perfect for grabbing a bite or enjoying a sunset cocktail. With playgrounds, BBQ areas, and a splash park for the kids, it’s a perfect spot for a family day out. Even if you’re like me and typically avoid cities, The Strand is definitely worth a visit.
