Cataract Gorge Reserve in Launceston is the absolute star of the town. Just a short drive from the city center, this place feels like a wild escape into nature’s playground. The reserve is renowned for its stunning gorge carved by the South Esk River, creating dramatic cliffs and lush vegetation that make you feel like you’re in a different world. The highlight of the reserve is undoubtedly the impressive gorge itself, with its rugged rocks and sweeping views that make for fantastic photo ops.

One of the most popular ways to explore Cataract Gorge is by taking the easy yet scenic walk along the well-maintained paths. The main trail is a delightful journey with gentle inclines and plenty of vantage points to soak in the stunning views. As you walk, you’ll pass by the beautiful Cataract Falls, where the cascading water adds a touch of magic to the experience. For a bit of adventure, you can tackle the more challenging trails that lead to the cliff tops. The Zig Zag Track is a great option for those wanting a more vigorous hike, offering panoramic views over the gorge and beyond. It's a bit of a workout, but the reward at the top is definitely worth it.

One of the coolest features of Cataract Gorge is the historic chairlift, which offers a unique way to view the gorge from above. Gliding gently over the trees and across the river, the chairlift provides a bird’s-eye view of the stunning landscape and is a fun and relaxing way to see the reserve. This costs between $12.00 to $20.00 depending on if you get a one-way or return ticket.

If you’re visiting in the summer, the Gorge's pool is a fantastic spot to cool off. I personally preferred swimming in the gorge itself though. Oh and there are free hot showers here, so make sure you take advantage of that as well!

Overall, Cataract Gorge Reserve is a fantastic destination that combines natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and a touch of history. Whether you’re hiking the trails, riding the chairlift, or simply enjoying a leisurely walk, it’s a place that captures the essence of Tasmania’s stunning landscapes and offers something for everyone.
