This one’s a short and sweet little adventure. The Kea Point Track starts from either the White Horse Hill Campground and is a super easy walk, about 40 minutes return with barely any incline. It’s a good one to knock out if you’re short on time but still want those classic Aoraki views.
You’ll walk through open valley terrain with Mount Sefton and the glaciers up ahead, and as you get closer, Aoraki/Mount Cook pops into view, standing tall at 3,724 metres. The track ends at a lookout with a bench and wide-open views of Mueller Lake, the Hooker Valley, and surrounding peaks like The Footstool and Mt Wakefield. Super peaceful spot to just sit for a bit and soak it all in.
It also shares the same start as the Sealy Tarns and Mueller Hut trails, so if you’re planning to do one of those bigger hikes, you could tackle Kea Point at the beginning. Trust me, though, do it before the stairs. Once you’ve smashed out all those steps to Sealy Tarns or Mueller Hut, your legs will not be in the mood for extras.
