Fantail Falls is a short but beautiful stop right off the Haast Highway, about 30 minutes from Makarora. The waterfall tumbles down into a clear blue river and is backed by classic West Coast rainforest, it’s a proper little postcard spot.

The walk from the car park is super quick, maybe a minute or two, and takes you straight to the riverbed. If the water’s low, you can wander across the rocks to get a closer look. There are usually heaps of rock stacks people have built, which adds to the vibe. It’s a chilled-out spot to stretch the legs, snap a photo, or just sit and soak it all in.

Be aware that the car park does fill up fast, as this is the starting point for the Brewster Hut hike.
