Exploring Blackdown Tablelands National Park feels like stepping into a timeless sanctuary where nature’s grandeur takes center stage. Located about 150 km west of Rockhampton, this park is a hidden gem, brimming with dramatic sandstone escarpments and lush, verdant rainforests. The park’s trails, like the Cascades Walk, lead you through enchanting gorges and past sparkling waterfalls, making every step a blend of exhilaration and awe. But the true highlight is the natural rock pools, with their crystal-clear waters and perfectly rounded shapes, offering a refreshing dip in a serene setting.

While a 2WD vehicle can technically navigate the bumpy dirt roads to the Rainbow Falls car park, a 4WD is highly recommended for a smoother ride. I made it in my van but went very slowly and was a little stressed ahah. If you’re up for a bit of adventure, the journey is worth it for the park's stunning beauty.

To reach the waterholes, park at the Rainbow Falls car park and follow the trail to the main falls. When you spot the "240 Steps" sign, veer right off the main path and follow the unsigned route. Stick to the right at any splits in the trail, and you’ll find the rock pools within about five minutes.

For a deeper exploration, tackle the Gudda Gumoo trail, a 4.5 km return walk that takes you past Rainbow Falls and a second, equally stunning waterfall. You’ll also encounter intriguing Aboriginal rock art along the way, adding an ancient touch to your adventure. Prepare for some rugged exploration, especially if there’s been recent rain, but the effort is richly rewarded with breathtaking views and a profound sense of immersion in Queensland’s untamed wilderness.
