Beach

Message from Cassadvantures

This was the first black sand beach I ever explored, and to say I was excited is an understatement! Whatipu Beach has vast black sandy shores, stunning dunes, and turquoise waters perfect for soaking up the rugged beauty of the Tasman Sea. The area also has a fascinating history, with old wharves and remnants of a railway track adding to its charm.

To reach Whatipu Beach in West Auckland, you’ll need to drive along a narrow, steep gravel road for the final 6 km (about 20 minutes). Fair warning: it’s a bit of an uncomfortable drive due to the tight, winding road, so be attentive in case of oncoming traffic. Take it slow, and you’ll be fine.

Once you park, head left through the picnic area and follow the sign that says “15 minutes to the beach.” I wouldn’t recommend swimming in the water once you arrive, as there are signs warning that the waters can be unpredictable. It’s safest to stick to walking ankle-deep along the shore.

This beach is truly stunning and will always be special to me as the first black sand beach I ever visited. Be sure to also check out the Omanawanui Track and the cave walk, both of which start from the same car park—details for these hikes are on my map!
