This one’s a cool little adventure just out of Franz Josef. The Tatare Tunnels Walk is about 3.9km return and takes around an hour to do. It kicks off from Cowan Street, same starting point as the Callery Gorge Bridge walk (which I reckon is worth tacking on while you’re there). It does not link up with the Terrace Walk, even though it seems like it should. The track starts with a cruisy walk through lush forest and gives you some nice views into Tatare Gorge before leading you to a set of old tunnels that were used back in the gold mining days.

If you’re keen to head into the tunnels, definitely bring a torch and a raincoat; they’re dark, drippy, and your feet will likely get wet. The track itself is easy with a gentle incline. I’d also recommend wearing warm, waterproof layers; classic West Coast weather can flip on you real quick.
