If you want to get as close as you can to Franz Josef Glacier without shelling out for a heli tour, this is the track to do. The Roberts Point Track is a solid hike, about 11km return with around 530 metres of elevation. It’s definitely one of the more challenging trails in the area, with rocky sections, swing bridges, and a few narrow parts where you’ll need to take your time. But the reward? An unreal view of the glacier from the closest public lookout point you can hike to. It’s a bit of a mission, but if you’re up for it, it’s seriously worth it. Just make sure you check the weather and track conditions first, it can get sketchy after rain.
