West Thumb Geyser Basin was one of the most unique geothermal areas I visited in Yellowstone because of the combination of the hot springs and Yellowstone Lake right next to each other. Seeing colorful geothermal pools sitting along the shoreline made the entire area feel very different from the rest of the park.
One thing I really liked is that you can experience the area without needing a hike. The boardwalks make it very easy to explore while still getting incredible views of the lake, thermal features, and surrounding mountains. The colors in the water looked especially beautiful when the sunlight reflected across the lake.
The area also feels more peaceful compared to some of Yellowstone’s busiest spots, and it’s one of the few places where you can combine geothermal scenery with water activities nearby, including kayaking on Yellowstone Lake.
