Jogyesa is one of those places that feels extra special because it’s right in the middle of the city. Instead of hiking out to a mountain temple, you can step off the busy streets of Insadong and suddenly you’re in this calm, lantern-filled courtyard. It’s deeply tied to Korean Buddhism, but it also feels very alive and welcoming. If you’re in Seoul around April or May, don’t miss the Lotus Lantern Festival — the whole place lights up with thousands of lanterns and it’s honestly one of the most magical sights in the city.

  • Subway: Take Line 3 to Anguk Station (Exit 6) → walk straight, then left at the first traffic light. The temple will be a short walk ahead.

  • Tourist Bus: Jogyesa is a stop on the Seoul City Sightseeing Bus, making it easy to pair with Insadong, Gyeongbokgung, and Bukchon Hanok Village.

What To See

  • Lantern Sky (Spring): Thousands of lotus lanterns strung above the courtyard for Buddha’s Birthday (beautiful day or night).

  • Lotus Plants (Summer): Pots filled with blooming lotuses bring calmness to the city setting.

  • Seasonal Flowers (Fall/Winter): The temple is never bare—expect colorful displays year-round.

  • Ancient Scholar Tree: Over 450 years old and 85 ft tall—lanterns hang from its branches.

  • Buddha Relic Stupa: A 10-story relic stupa gifted by the King of Thailand.

  • Main Dharma Hall (대웅전): The heart of Jogyesa with three giant golden Buddhas.

Tips

  • Go early morning or late evening for fewer crowds and peaceful vibes.

  • Pair with nearby Insadong, Bukchon Hanok Village, or Gyeongbokgung Palace for a cultural day out.

  • Photos are welcome, but be respectful during prayers and ceremonies.
