Hwaseomun Gate (화서문)
Hwaseomun Gate is the easiest fortress gate to reach from Suwon Station, making it an ideal starting point for a day trip to Hwaseong Fortress. From the bus stop, you’ll immediately see the fortress walls, along with nearby amenities like public toilets, a Tourist Information Center, and a convenience store.

Designated as Korea’s Treasure No. 403 in 1964, Hwaseomun is one of the most well-preserved gates of the fortress. Viewed alongside the towering Seobukgongsimdon (Northwestern Watchtower), it forms one of the fortress’s most iconic scenes. Interestingly, while “Hwaseomun” translates to West Gate, it actually sits at the northwest corner of the fortress.

💡 Tip: Stop by the Hwaseomun Tourist Information Center before starting your walk.

Hwaseo Park
Located to the right of Hwaseomun Gate, Hwaseo Park is particularly famous in autumn for its golden fields of silver grass. With the fortress walls and Seobukgangnu Pavilion as the backdrop, this spot is a favorite for photos and seasonal strolls.

Trail from Hwaseomun Gate to Jangangmun Gate
The path between Hwaseomun Gate and Jangangmun Gate (North Gate) is an easy, level walk lined with key fortress structures. Along the way, you’ll pass:

  • Guard Pavilion & Guard Post

  • Bukseoporu (Northwestern Artillery Pavilion) – the tallest of Hwaseong’s five artillery pavilions. Its lower two floors were designed for firing artillery, while the top floor gave soldiers a vantage point to watch and attack enemies.

Outside the fortress wall lies Jangan Park, a lively community space where locals gather to play chess, exercise, or walk their dogs. Just below the inner fortress wall you’ll find stylish cafés and restaurants—perfect for a break.

💡 For a panoramic view of Hwaseong Fortress, grab a rooftop seat at one of these cafés.

K-Drama Filming Location
The 2025 drama Love Scout filmed scenes here in Episode 4. You’ll recognize the fortress walls in the backdrop when the characters dash into the 7-Eleven in front of Hwaseomun Gate during a rainstorm—complete with Eun-ho’s now-famous pink umbrella.
