If you’re planning a day trip from Seoul, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress should be at the very top of your list. Just under an hour away, it’s not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also one of the most beautiful places to experience Korea’s Joseon Dynasty history, local culture, and even a bit of K-drama magic.
I’ve been here a few times now, and every visit feels different. Sometimes I’ll climb the fortress walls for the views, other times I’ll café-hop in Haengnidan-gil, or spend an evening wandering the fortress under lantern lights. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most out of your trip.
Getting There from Seoul
The easiest way is by train or subway to Suwon Station:
Subway Line 1: ~53 minutes from Seoul Station (₩2,100).
ITX Train: ~31 minutes from Seoul Station (₩4,800, my recommendation if you want to save time).
From Suwon Station, you can hop on a local bus (only 10 minutes) that drops you right at Hwaseomun Gate, the fortress’s western entrance.
💡 Tip: Stop at the Tourist Information Center near Exit 4 before boarding a bus. They hand out free maps in English that are super handy for planning your walking route.
Walking the Fortress Walls
The full loop of the fortress is 5.74 km and takes about 3 hours, but you don’t have to do it all at once. Each section has its own personality and highlights, so think of it as choosing your own adventure.
Section 1: Hwaseomun Gate → Hwaseo Park → Janganmun Gate
If it’s your first time, this is where I’d start. Hwaseomun Gate is the easiest to reach from Suwon Station, and right away you’ll be greeted with that iconic view of the gate paired with the tall Seobukgongsimdon (Northwestern Watchtower).
The walk to Janganmun Gate is mostly flat, making it a great warm-up. Along the way, you’ll pass Hwaseo Park, which bursts into golden silver grass in autumn. Locals love it for photos, and honestly, it’s stunning.
K-Drama Spot: If you watched Love Scout (2025), you’ll recognize Hwaseomun Gate from the rain scene where they duck into a 7-Eleven with that famous pink umbrella.
Tip: Stop for a coffee break at one of the rooftop cafés just below the wall. They give you a panoramic fortress view for the price of a latte.
Section 2: Hwahongmun Watergate → Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion → Yeonmudae → Changnyongmun Gate
This stretch is my personal favorite because it combines history with some activities.
Hwahongmun Watergate is a masterpiece, built over the Suwoncheon Stream with multiple stone arches.
Climb up to Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion (Treasure No. 1709), where King Jeongjo used to rest. The views here—fortress walls on one side, Suwoncheon on the other—are unbeatable.
At Yeonmudae Command Post, you can try traditional Korean archery (₩2,000 for 10 arrows) or hop on the Hwaseong Tourist Train that circles the fortress. For something unique, ride the Flying Suwon helium balloon that soars above the walls for sky-high views.
💡 Tip: Visit this section in the late afternoon. The golden hour light makes Banghwasuryujeong glow, and if you stick around, the fortress lights up beautifully at night.
Section 3: Changnyongmun Gate → Paldalmun Gate
This section is quieter and perfect if you want to escape the crowds. The Beacon Tower (Bongdon) is here, where smoke signals once warned of enemy attacks. Eventually, you’ll reach Paldalmun Gate, the fortress’s southern entrance and a bustling hub for centuries thanks to its connection to trade routes.
K-Drama Spot: Twenty-Five, Twenty-One shot one of its most recognizable “shoelace scene” moments in this area, with Paldalmun in the backdrop.
Tip: pop into Paldalmun Market or Yeongdong Market for local snacks and street food.
Section 4: Paldalmun Gate → Paldalsan Mountain → Hwaseomun Gate
If you’re up for a light hike, this section climbs up Paldalsan Mountain (128m). At the summit you’ll find the Western Command Post and Archery Platform, plus sweeping views of the entire fortress and the city beyond. In spring, this trail is lined with cherry blossoms, turning it into one of Suwon’s prettiest walking routes.
K-Drama Spot: The fortress arch on this trail appears in Twenty-Five, Twenty-One and is a popular photo location for fans.
Tip: Wear tennis shoes for this one. If you go in spring, time your visit for early morning before the blossom-viewing crowds arrive.
Attractions Near the Fortress
One of the best things about Suwon is how compact everything is—once you’re inside the fortress walls, all the main attractions are within walking distance.
Hwaseong Haenggung Palace
Once King Jeongjo’s temporary palace, this is the largest of its kind from the Joseon era. Parts were destroyed during colonial times but restored in 2003. The courtyards and halls are gorgeous, and cultural performances are often held here.
🎬 Seen in Dae Jang Geum, Yi San, Love in the Moonlight, and The King and the Clown.
💡 Tip: Check the schedule for the night opening (May–Oct). The palace lit up at night is magical and far less crowded.
Haengnidan-gil (Craft Street)
This trendy 410m stretch between the palace and Paldalmun is lined with cafés, boutiques, and craft shops. Perfect for a coffee or lunch break.
🎬 In Lovely Runner, it’s where Sol and Sun-jae go on a date after his swimming competition win.
Don’t miss Booter Café (The Law Café filming location) and Mong Ted Café (a drama fan favorite, since it doubled as Sol’s house with the yellow umbrella still intact).
Haenggung-dong Mural Village
Just a few minutes’ walk from Hwahongmun, this artsy neighborhood is filled with painted walls, murals, and quirky gardens. It’s small but very photogenic.

Starfield Library Suwon
A modern contrast to the fortress: a four-story library with 22m-high shelves inside Starfield Suwon Mall (one subway stop from Suwon Station). It’s one of Korea’s most Instagrammable libraries, complete with a Vinyl Café where you can play records.
