A haenggung was a temporary palace used by the king and royal family as a retreat during wartime. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon is the largest of these palaces, dating back to the reign of King Jeongjo (1776–1800) of the Joseon Dynasty.
Beyond its role as a wartime shelter, King Jeongjo used the palace as a base when visiting his father’s tomb, and it became the setting for many important events. Notably, it hosted a grand banquet for his mother’s 60th birthday and ceremonies awarding certificates to candidates who passed special national exams.
Today, Hwaseong Haenggung is one of Suwon’s cultural highlights, hosting traditional performances, reenactments, and hands-on activities that bring Joseon history to life.
