Built in 1794 during the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion—officially known as Dongbukgangnu Pavilion—sits on a hill just east of Hwahongmun Gate. Its poetic nickname, Banghwasuryujeong, means “a pavilion where one can find flowers and stroll among willow trees,” perfectly capturing its serene atmosphere.
The pavilion has endured natural damage over the centuries, including flooding that led to a major reconstruction in 1848. Ongoing preservation efforts culminated in its designation as Treasure No. 1709 in 2011. It’s praised as one of Hwaseong Fortress’s most original structures, with a unique roofline and composition that look different depending on your viewing angle.
Historically, Banghwasuryujeong was known as a resting place for King Jeongjo during his visits to Hwaseong. From the pavilion, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the fortress: Yeonmudae Post to the east, Janganmun Gate to the west, and Paldalsan Mountain rising in the background
