First built in 1396, the Hanyang City Wall—also known as Hanyangdoseong or the Seoul City Wall—has guarded the capital for more than 600 years. The wall was carefully constructed to follow the city’s natural ridges and landscapes. Although parts of it were damaged during Seoul’s modernization, large sections remain intact today, standing as a remarkable link between past and present.
To dive deeper into its history, head to the Seoul City Wall Museum inside Heunginjimun Park. The museum showcases the story of the wall from the Joseon dynasty to modern-day Seoul, with spaces including a permanent exhibition hall, rotating special exhibitions, a city wall information center, and a study room. It’s a cultural hub where you can learn how the wall shaped the city—and why it still matters today.
