If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from Seoul, the Garden of Morning Calm is one of the most beautiful day trips you can take. Just over an hour away in Gapyeong, this private garden is famous for its colorful flowers, seasonal festivals, and tranquil paths that feel straight out of a fairytale.
The garden was designed in 1996 by Professor Han Sang-kyung, inspired by Korea’s poetic nickname, “The Land of Morning Calm.” Spanning over 330,000㎡, it’s home to 5,000 plant species and 22 themed gardens — each with its own personality.
Every season feels different here:
Spring: Cherry blossoms & azaleas burst into color.
Summer: Lush hydrangeas and cool shaded paths.
Autumn: A blaze of red and gold leaves.
Winter: The famous Lighting Festival transforms the garden into a glowing wonderland.
How to Get There from Seoul
If you’re visiting multiple Gapyeong attractions (like Nami Island or Petite France), the easiest way is to use the Gapyeong City Tour Bus — it’s a hop-on, hop-off bus that connects all the main sights. (See my section on “How to Get from Seoul to The Garden of Morning Calm” for details.)

Spend at least 2–3 hours to explore fully.
Wear comfortable shoes — the garden is big and involves a lot of walking.
Bring water or snacks (or a small picnic). There are cafés inside, but options are limited.
If you’re visiting in winter, plan to stay until dark to catch the Lighting Festival.
Pair your visit with Nami Island, Petite France & Italian Village, or the Gapyeong Rail Bike.
