In Victorian Belfast, high-society ladies often enjoyed gin in private, partitioned "snugs" or booths within "gin palaces" like the Crown Liquor Saloon (est. 1826) to avoid the stigma of drinking in public. These secluded areas allowed women to drink without being seen in the male-dominated public areas and it became an iconic place for the ladies of Belfast to come enjoy their gin in peace.
