The Skunk Train Rail Bikes on the Noyo excursion takes the idea of a train ride and flips it into something way more interactive. Instead of just sitting back and watching the world go by, you’re pedaling your way through the redwoods on a rail bike. Don't worry, there is an electric motor if you just want to coast too!
This is a 25-mile round-trip ride through some of the most beautiful forests along the Mendocino Coast. You’ll glide along old railroad tracks following the Noyo River, surrounded by towering redwoods the entire way. It’s peaceful, immersive, and surreal how quiet it feels once you’re out there.
Depending on the season, you might spot:
Waterfalls flowing through the canyon.
Banana slugs (The California state slug!!!).
Adorable native California newts.
And that deep, lush green that Northern California does better than anywhere else.
About halfway through, you’ll stop at Camp Noyo for a 45-minute break, where a picnic is included with your ticket. It’s the perfect reset before heading back.
What makes this experience different
This is one of the most unique, fun, and interactive ways I've ever explored a redwood forest. I try to do it every time I'm back in Mendocino.
Important Strategy Notes
This is a longer experience, so plan for a few hours total, not a quick stop.
Tickets are definitely on the pricier side… but this is one of those “worth it” experiences if you value something unique.
Dress in layers since it can be cool and damp in the redwood forest, even on warmer days. And bring an actual heavy jacket plus a face cover if you go in the colder months. You'll thank me later.
Book in advance. This is one of the most popular things to do in the Fort Bragg area.
Also worth knowing
They offer a second railbike option called Rail Bikes Along Pudding Creek. It's shorter and a bit more relaxed. So it's a good option if you want the experience without committing to the full ride.
The Bottom Line
You can hike through the redwoods.
You can drive through them.
