From this parking lot there are a number of trails that you can take to see the lava fields and craters from several recent eruptions. Only a few eruptions have been 'tourist friendly' but this area is a safe place to see the destruction the lava had. A map of the trails, viewpoints and other parking areas is here. If a new eruption occurs, you may be able to see it from this area and/or a new trail may be built.

DO NOT WALK ON THE LAVA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! The lava may appear strong, but the crust may be thin and the lava underneath is hot. Stay on marked trails.

Although you may not see fresh, orange lava at the time of your visit, seeing the lava field is pretty cool. In general, the eruptions that have occurred in this area, have not affected public safety. Travel to/from the international airport has remained normal, most tours and excursions run as planned, and Highway 1 (the Ring Road) is open.
