Þorsmörk is a favorite and special place in the Icelandic Highlands. There are a number of hiking trails here, all very beautiful. A visit to Þorsmörk is definitely worth a day of your itinerary if you can spare it!

There are two "Base Camps" in Þorsmörk - Basar and Husadalur. Getting to either base camp requires multiple river crossings. However, getting to Husadalur is a bit more difficult because it requires a major river crossing. If driving yourself, it's essential to have a 4x4 Super Jeep (kitted-out Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover Defender).

The best place to rent a 4x4 Super Jeep is from ISAK. They have well-equipped, photogenic cars, with a snorkel. This helps ensure you don't drown the engine while crossing a river. Use the code "gunnar" for renting your Defender on a special price.

Besides the river crossings, the roads to Þorsmörk are F-Roads. These roads are only accessible in the summer. Be sure you have a full tank of fuel and check road conditions and closures at road.is BEFORE attempting to visit Þorsmörk. Weather conditions can also change quickly and make traveling in the Highlands unsafe. Check the weather forecast at vedur.is. Account for longer driving times due to the slow pace at which you need to drive on F-Roads.

Tips on river crossings: https://epiciceland.net/icelandic-rivers-how-to-cross/. Make sure to go with the stream (diagonal across the river in the direction of the flow). Do not drive against the stream, but let the flow of the river help you cross.

You may also take the River Bus or a guided day tour (Midgard Adventure is my favorite!). Or, hike one of the two major trails that end/start here (a multi-day journey on the Laugavegur Trail or the intense one-day Fimmvörðuháls Trail).

Accommodation in Þorsmörk can be found at Volcano Huts and they serve as a great base camp as well. Or you can camp at Básar Huts.
