Rauðaskál is translated as "the red bowl". It's not far from Hekla volcano and can be incorporated into a trip to Landmannalaugar. Keep in mind that this spot is not accessible outside of summer. It requires driving on an F-road (4x4 - mountain road) and therefore a 4x4 vehicle is mandatory. Check road.is for road conditions and closures. There are no river crossings getting here. But, because this is a challenging F-Road, be sure to account for extra time driving here. The parking area is located here. Note that off-road driving in Iceland is ILLEGAL - you must stay on the designated track/road. And, do not attempt to drive up the side of the crater. Instead, park at the gravel lot at the base of the crater and walk up to the rim. Be warned, there are no safety barriers nor ropes and it can be quite windy at the top.

If you want to play it safe and be in a well-equipped, photogenic car, then you should rent an old-school Land Rover Defender from www.isak.is. Use the code "gunnar" for renting your Defender on a special price.
