Hiking Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet, is an unforgettable adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. Known for its challenging trails, unpredictable weather, and breathtaking views, the hike offers a true test of endurance and preparation.
I'd suggest to hike via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail (up) and Jewell Trail (down) - it's a 7.4-mile, dog-friendly loop with a 3,720-ft elevation gain. Parking is available at Marshfield Station in Jefferson, NH, but arrive early to secure a spot. The hike begins alongside a stream with multiple waterfalls, offering great photo opportunities and rest stops. After about 2.5 miles, you’ll reach the Lake of the Clouds Hut — a perfect place to rest and refill water before continuing the final 1.4 miles to the summit. From there, you’ll follow Crawford Path, passing alpine lakes and, on a clear day, enjoying breathtaking summit views.
At the top, there’s a museum, café, and bathrooms. For the descent, you’ll take the Gulfside Trail to Jewell Trail, which provides stunning views of Mount Clay, Mount Madison, Mount Adams, and Mount Jefferson. Be prepared for steep sections, changing weather, and strong sun exposure above the treeline — bring layers, sunscreen, plenty of water, and snacks. Depending on the season, you may even spot snowboarders or skiers on the ravines. Once you're back down at the parking lot congrats you’ve just completed the tallest of the NH48 peaks!
