Poás Volcano National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most famous volcanoes, featuring a massive crater and steaming fumaroles. The park is located in Alajuela Province, about 48 km (roughly 1–1.5 hours by car) from San José, making it an easy day trip from the capital.
The main crater viewpoint is accessible via an easy, paved walk of 5–10 minutes from the parking area. For a longer experience, the Laguna Botos Trail is a 30–40 minute round-trip hike through cloud forest to an extinct crater lake. The total visit usually takes 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the viewpoints.
Bathrooms and souvenir places are also available in this location.
The park requires advance online reservations due to visitor limits. Entrance fees are around $15 USD per adult for non-residents, with lower fees for children and Costa Rican residents.
Poás Volcano National Park is perfect for travelers seeking an accessible volcano adventure with spectacular crater views and short trails, all within a short drive from San José.
TIP: RECOMENDABLE TO VISIT EARLY IN THE MORNING BECAUSE OF CLOUDY AFTERNOONS. AFTER 2PM YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO COME IN TO THE PARK.
