Miravalles Volcano is a rugged and less-crowded volcano in Guanacaste, known for its steaming fumaroles, lush forests, and geothermal activity. About 3.5–4 hours (200 km / 124 miles) from San José, it’s an adventurous escape with trails ranging from easy walks to moderate hikes through volcanic terrain, where you can spot monkeys, tropical birds, and iguanas along the way. Parking is available near the trailheads, making the hikes accessible for most visitors. The weather is warm and humid, with occasional rain showers during the wet season (May–November), so bringing a light rain jacket is smart. There is small trail that takes you through some fumaroles and you can decide to to a self-guided tour or a guided tour. After that small hike you can relax at the geothermal hot spring heated by the volcano — a perfect reward after exploring Miravalles’ dramatic landscapes.

Arrive early so you can do a hike that inlcudes hanging bridges and waterfalls

TIP: BRING INSECT REPELLENT BECUASE OF THE HUMID CLIMATE IN THIS REGION.
