Cataratas Nauyaca is one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular waterfall destinations, featuring a two-tier cascade surrounded by lush rainforest. Located about 3 hours (130 km / 81 miles) from San José, it’s accessible by car, horseback, or a guided hike through scenic trails. The main hike is moderate to challenging, taking roughly 1.5–2 hours one way through shaded forest paths where you can spot tropical birds, monkeys, and iguanas. Parking is available near the trailhead, but spaces can fill quickly on weekends, so arriving early is recommended. Swimming at the base of the falls is allowed and incredibly refreshing, though caution is advised after heavy rains when currents can strengthen. The area is humid and trails can be slippery, so sturdy shoes, water, and insect repellent are essential.

Local tip: consider arriving early to enjoy the falls before tour groups arrive, and don’t miss the smaller pools upstream for a quieter experience. Cataratas Nauyaca combines adventure, wildlife, and stunning natural beauty, making it a must-visit for hikers and nature lovers alike.
