Famous mountain tarn that reflects Mount Taranaki. Reasonably easy board walk track, park at Mangorei road carpark for the shortest route. (4 hours return)

Pouakai Tarns is an incredible scenic hike located in the beautiful wilderness of Taranaki, New Zealand. With its mesmerising reflections of Mount Taranaki, Pouakai Circuit Reflective Tarn park is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is challenging to ascend to the mountain-top tarns. With the Mangorei Track upgrade, the path has become somewhat easier and allows the walkers to experience different aspects of nature such as unique wildlife, dense forests and mesmerising valley views. The best times to visit Pouakai Tarns are either at sunrise or sunset, when the light creates a magical feel and with a low percentage of low and mid cloud cover, you can witness one of the most spectacular views in not just New Zealand but around the world.
