Ship wreck best seen at low tide

On the Taranaki coast, visitors can explore a fascinating piece of history – The SS Gairloch. This coastal steamer ran aground on a moonless night in 1903 after narrowly missing its sister ship, the Ngapuhi. Now, over 100 years later, the wreck is still visible which is slowly crumbling into the sand near Oakura. Visitors can also explore what's left of the ship's engines and its bottom plates, now home to all kinds of sea life. Whether it’s marveling at the remains or taking a souvenir from its salvaged silverware, linen, upholstery and spirits, make sure you take a day trip to explore one of New Zealand’s oldest landmarks.
