Koutu Boulders is a unique destination located in the south shore of the Hokianga Harbour in New Zealand. The boulders are an example of concretions, where globular nodules have formed over millions of years in the sedimentary rocks. The largest boulders have diameters of up to 3 metres and make for great fun playing bowls or exploring the beach. Visitors can access the boulders two ways; through Koutu Loop Road and (for the bigger ones) from Cabbage Tree Bay Road. Low tide is the best time to explore the boulders as at high tide it becomes quite dangerous. Tourists may want to consider bringing a picnic and taking in the view as they visit this stunning destination.
