The Hāpuawhenua Viaduct is a marvel of engineering that stands between the towns of Ohakune and Horopito in the Tongariro National Park. It spans412 metres and stands 51 metres tall, made of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete. Completed in 1987 to replace an outdated steel viaduct form 1908, it was part of the North Island Main Trunk line electrification scheme to reduce travel times and increase load capacity. This giant structural feat was designed by Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Limited and constructed by Fletcher Construction Company—the first unbroken rail journey from Wellington to Auckland even passed over the viaduct! Today, the old viaduct has been repurposed for recreational uses, including bungy jumping and walking and cycling trails. Both the new and old viaducts are heritage recognised sites, offering a unique and thrilling experience of railway history.
