Castel Dell’Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples, dating back to the 12th century, is perched atop a small island-turned-peninsula of Megaride and overlooks the Gulf of Naples.

Castel dell'Ovo is an iconic seafront castle located in Naples, Italy. This ancient castle, built and fortified over centuries, has a long history tied to the rise and decline of various empires. Its name comes from a magical legend about the Roman poet Virgil who according to folklore, made sure to put a magical egg into the foundations in order to support the fortifications. Built by the Normans in the 12th century, the Castel dell'Ovo remains an important cultural and historical site and today, visitors can explore the castle grounds and walk around the nearby promenade which offers stunning views of the coastline.
