Trams are a traditional and fun way to explore Lisbon, particularly when it comes to several of the main attractions in the neighborhood of Alfama, which are located up in this historic hill. Elétrico 28 (Tram no. 28) is the most iconic and popular route, passing by many monuments, viewpoints and interesting spots right where the city was born. The tour starts at Praça Martim Moniz ("Martim Moniz Square"), in downtown Lisbon, and runs all the way to Campo de Ourique.

Lines can be huge depending on the time of the day, so try to get there early in the morning. If you used the metro system less than one hour prior to hopping on the tram, your ticket will still be valid for this ride because it is considered a continuation of your original travel.

One can hop on and hop of at any point throughout the tram's route. The perfect spot to leave Elétrico 28 is perhaps at Largo das Portas do Sol, one of Lisbon's best viewpoints overlooking the Tagus river. From here, one can reach the Saint George's Castle in just five minutes by foot. This is our recommended next step!
