Igreja de São Domingos ("Saint Dominic church") was once the largest church in Lisbon. It dates back to the 13th century and survived several disasters, namely the 1531 earthquake, the 1755 earthquake and a massive fire in 1959. The church reopened in 1994.

In 1506, Igreja de São Domingos and the square right in front of it were the setting of the so-called "Lisbon massacre", when thousands of members of the city's Jewish community were brutally murdered as a direct consequence of the Inquisition in Portugal.

Recently, a landmark paying homage to all the victims was installed right in front of the church.
