Ponte Vasco da Gama ("Vasco da Gama Bridge") is the second longest bridge in Europe, after the Crimean Bridge and the the longest one in the European Union.
It crosses the Tagus river and connects Lisbon to the municipality of Montijo, in the south bank of the river. It was inaugurated in 1998, in the context of the 1998 World's Fair known as Expo 98.
It pays homage to Vasco da Gama, one of the greatest Portuguese explorers of all times, having reached India through sea for the first time in history.
