Caminho Real da Encumeada (PR12) – From Boca da Corrida
This trail is part of the legendary Caminho Real da Encumeada – one of my absolute favorites if you’re looking for something raw, historic and ridiculously scenic. We start at Boca da Corrida viewpoint, and right from the parking lot you’re staring straight into the Curral das Freiras valley – a crazy view that feels like you’re looking into another world.
The path itself is old cobblestone, they call it the Royal Path, and you feel that history under your feet. It crosses the central mountain massif of the island and takes you through Laurissilva forest (UNESCO), open ridges and deep valleys. It’s a moderate hike – not too hard, but you’ll feel like you’ve really explored Madeira properly by the end.
My tip
Check the weather and cloud webcams before you head out – this one is perfect: Boca da Corrida Webcam.
If the valley is covered in fog, you won’t see a thing – but on a clear day? It’s pure magic.
If you don’t have a car, no stress – I can help arrange a private transfer so you can just focus on the hike and not the logistics.
