The Lichtenhainer Waterfall is a beautiful sight to behold in Kirnitzschtal, South Saxony. It was improved in the 1830s by adding a “weir”, or small dam, to increase its beauty and profitability. Visitors are delighted as the usually calm waterfall becomes a rushing torrent when enough of them gather—nowadays financed by no one. Not only can this breathtaking waterfall be admired, but it also powers the Bad Schandau, a 171- foot tall Art Nouveau elevator that was built in 1904. The best way to get there is via the solar powered Kirnitzsch Valley tram from Bad Schandau, which will drop you off just 100 meters away from the falls. Better yet, the gate is pulled every two hours and timed with accompanying music! This experience through nature and history is definitely worth the trip.
