This hike is one of the more well-marked and safer ones on Rarotonga — a great option if you want something steady but still satisfying. The track is a gentle incline, easy to follow, and not too long, making it super doable for most. 👍
🌿 Once you reach the top plateau (around 350 meters), things get a bit more adventurous! To reach the actual summit, you’ll need to scramble up some steep rocks. It’s definitely a heart-pumper and can feel a little sketchy — so use common sense and only do it if you’re confident and up for a little thrill. 😅🧗♀️
👣 A Few Handy Tips
📸 Mark your way – Once you reach the top, the rock climb entry/exit isn’t signposted and can be hard to find on the way back down. Hang a bright piece of clothing or snap a photo of nearby trees/views to help spot it again later. From experience — it saves time and head-scratching!
🌿 Scratchy ferns – Up top there are some low-hanging ferns that can give your legs a bit of a tickle (or a scratch). We’re cool with wearing shorts, but if that bothers you, long pants might be your friend.
🧭 Exploration-friendly – There are several tracks to follow around the top, which adds a fun and different views.
👋 Go With a Local
Want the best experience (and some great stories along the way)? Go with a guide. We recommend Bruce from maungatours.com — he’s awesome and knows the Rarotonga tracks inside out. He is the first person to be called when there is a moutain search & rescue! So you're in safe hands.
Raemaru trailhead is a favourite of ours — manageable, exciting, and packed with views. Just the right balance of chill and challenge! 🌄🥾✨
