This hike is NO JOKE!! It's for mad-(wo)men only!
In saying that, its absolutely epic!! We both had different feelings about this hike as it is the most intense hike we've ever done!! We got very close to the peak but the final rope climbs were just too dangerous for our liking.
⛰️ Chasing the Highest Point on Rarotonga ⛰️
Te Manga is Rarotonga’s tallest peak, standing proud at 652 meters (over 2,100 feet). It’s not the most famous hike on the island—that title usually goes to The Needle—but for those who take it on, Te Manga offers an unforgettable, wild adventure deep into the heart of the island’s jungle.
🥾 What to Expect on the Hike
🌴 Dense Jungle Trails: The path is rugged and raw, winding through thick rainforest, tangled roots, and mossy rocks. Expect to get muddy—especially after rain!
🧗♂️ Some Serious Climbing: This isn’t just a walk—parts of the trail require scrambling up steep, slippery sections, sometimes with ropes tied to trees to help you pull yourself up.
🦜 Nature All Around: You’ll be surrounded by towering ferns, chirping birds, and the occasional giant tropical tree that's been standing there for centuries.
🌄 Incredible Views: If the clouds clear at the summit, the 360° views across Rarotonga’s lush mountains and out to the ocean are absolutely breathtaking.
🕘 Good to Know Before You Go
🥤 Bring: Plenty of water, sturdy shoes with good grip, insect repellent, and maybe a snack or two.
🌧️ Weather Matters: Never do this after, during or with expected heavy rain.
🧭 Navigation: This hike isn’t very clearly marked. Only go with a local who knows the way or by using the pro version of Alltrails that has the offline map (no reception). The best option is to go with Bruce from Maunga Tours.
🕓 Timing: The hike takes about 4–5 hours return, depending on your pace and conditions.
