Hidden Gem Walk – Northland
Tucked just off State Highway 1 north of Whangārei lies one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it treasures. The dramatic limestone outcrops suddenly appear beside the road, making it impossible not to pull over and explore. What follows is a short, easy loop walk through an ancient landscape that feels both mysterious and peaceful.
The path winds past sculpted karst limestone formations and around a calm lake where reflections dance in the still water. It’s only about a 30–45 minute stroll (roughly 2 km), mostly flat and well maintained, so it’s perfect for families, strollers, or anyone wanting a gentle nature break. The area is rich in history too - once home to coal mining, with remnants of an old horse tramline still visible if you look closely.
Picnic tables by the lake make it an ideal stop for lunch, and there are toilets and a small car park nearby. Morning or late afternoon visits are best for softer light on the rocks, and if it’s been raining, just watch your footing — the limestone can get slippery. Visitors are asked to stay on the track, as the formations are culturally significant and the ground can have hidden sinkholes.

Sinkholes are a common feature of karst landscapes. Take extreme care and closely supervise small children.
To minimise disturbance to the area, and out of respect to local iwi and their ancestors, keep to the marked track.
