Tucked just outside town near Franz Josef village, is this easy little bush walk is one of those underrated spots that’s perfect when you want something quick but still scenic. You can reach the glowworms within 10 minutes, but the walk is longer if you prefer (we recommend doing the full walk as its beautiful).
Terrace Walk is a peaceful rainforest track that’s just as good during the day as it is after dark. The walk starts off State Highway 6, at the southern end of Franz Josef village near the 'Our Lady of the Alps' church on the left hand side of the road heading south towards Fox Glacier. The track entrance has a very small parking area, but there is plenty of parking in town just a short walk away.

'Highly recommend for glowworms. Try to not use a torch and use the city lights to walk on the track. This allows ur eyes to adjust to see the glow worms. There are lots and lots of them. See the photo for the map on where to find them. There are reflective markers on the track to show you the spot. 'Magical to see glow worms. Enjoyed taking kids to see them scattered around the woods. Best part to see them near the track was approx 200m in on the right. Didn’t really add much to go beyond that. Just note they are not abundant like in Waitomo caves. Much better view if you go in without any lights and just let your eyes adjust, the path is straightforward.' - Jo, All Trails
