Just a stone's throw from the heart of Franz Josef township, this hidden gem walk is a local favourite for a reason. You'll meander through lush, dense rainforest, following the path of an old gold-mining water race before it descends to the Callery Gorge. The highlight for many is the view from the historic swing bridge, looking down into the gorge itself. The 5.2km return track has some steeper sections and uneven ground, especially towards the end, but the scenery makes it well worth the effort. Plan for about 1.5-2hr return walk.
The route:
Entrance is on the edge of Franz Josef town near the wildlife center, it shares the first five minutes with the Tatare Tunnels Walk. This section is a short, gentle climb to a high terrace behind Franz Josef/Waiau township, passing the town water supply pipes and tanks.
The track then narrows through the rainforest, and follows alongside an old gold mining water race. The water race and some rusty relics are among the last visual reminders of the gold mining era.
The track then descends to the historic Callery Gorge bridge. From here there are views of the narrow Callery Gorge which has changed dramatically over the years due to gravel deposits filling in the gorge and raising the level of the riverbed.

'Stated as an Easy walk, it's a full on 40 mins+ and the same on the return. The start is on a gravel path that climbs steadily. The first wooden bridge passes over a lovely little waterfall which cascades over moss covered boulders. From here the trail becomes rocks, tree roots and fairly narrow and steep for the rest of the walk. The swing bridge over the gorge is blocked at the other end but you can walk over to get a view down to the river. Be prepared for a real hike on the way back! Such a varied walk. Know before you go
Check the current track conditions and weather forecasts at the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre before starting your trip.
Always take warm and waterproof clothing as the weather can change rapidly.
Carry drinking water, insect repellent and sun protection at all times.
Sturdy footwear, such as tramping boots, is recommended.
Rocks are likely to be slippery especially after/during frosts and rain.
