Multiple walking options:
▪ Short return to lookout: ~1–2 km (15–30 min)
▪ Full loop via Rings Beach: ~4.7 km (2–3 hours)Easy-to-moderate terrain with a few short climbs
Graveled path with occasional roots and muddy patches
Ridge lookout offers epic views over Kūaotunu and Mercury Bay
Excellent signage along the way thanks to local volunteers
Dogs are allowed on leash only — this is kiwi country! Please use the shoe cleaning stations to protect the kauri and stay on the track to help conservation efforts.
Tip: If you do the trail in reverse (right at the sign) you do the majority of the walk then can have a dip in the sea before the final ~1km
Reviews:
"Fun trail with good views of Matarangi town and beach! Trail was pretty slippery and muddy, did go after some rain though! Limited parking at the trail head." - Miley, Alltrails
"Great hiking trail with lovely views. It takes about 2 hours to complete the full loop. Quite a few ups and downs and a slightly uneven surface (tree roots etc) so it's not super easy but it's very doable for anyone with an average fitness level." - Maria, Google
