This quiet trail near Otematata offers a rewarding mix of forest, lake, and mountain views without the crowds.
The Benmore Peninsula Loop is a 4.0-km track that winds through shady pine and exotic forest before opening up to stunning panoramas of Lake Benmore, Mount Cook, and scattered lake islands. 🌼 It's a moderately challenging hike, taking about 1 hour - 2hrs to complete, with a few short climbs and mostly well-maintained paths. Wildflowers, butterflies, and dragonflies add to the magic, especially on a sunny day. 🦋
🌲While the track is popular with walkers and hikers, it’s still peaceful during quieter times. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and the trail is open year-round — making it a solid pick no matter the season. For those short on time, you can drive to the end of Loch Laird Road and enjoy incredible views just a few steps from the car.
Just note: the track isn’t well signposted, so keep an eye out for markers (or use the Alltrails map - link below)
