This flat loop track, ideal for kids, follows the lagoon shoreline with good bird watching to the rusting remains of the Waverley ship.

Take a short walk, or do the full 3 hour loop.

This easy loop walk offers a glimpse into the Wairau Lagoons and the unique habitat they provide for local wildlife. The track is flat and follows the shoreline of the upper lagoon, passing Budges and Moerepo Islands before reaching the main channel. Here, you’ll find the rusting remains of the Waverley shipwreck, sitting in the mud.

The Waverley was originally towed from Wellington by the SS Wairau to be scuttled at the mouth of the Wairau River as a breakwater. However, before this could happen, a flood swept the vessel up the channel to its current resting place in the lagoons.

You can return the same way or take a more direct route across the saltmarsh, where salt-tolerant plants thrive. Alternatively, continue past the Waverley for views of the Wairau River.
